One more reason:

  - Avoid duplicated work by translators. For example, a few years ago, I
    was dumb enough to accept a Japanese translation for gettext directly,
    and a year later or so, another translator, this time in the Japanese
    translation team, did the same work again. This was frustrating for
    all sides.
