Actually, coreutils uses the new version-etc.c format nowadays
(this is not surprising, since Jim Meyering maintains both):

   $ ls --version

The GNU Coding Standards say that the copyright notice should be right
after the version number, and that it is OK to finish the output with
a list of the major authors, so version-etc.c is right in the GNU
mainstream here.
