I think this has been reported before, but not sure the thread ever
reached resolution:

That thread was about 0.0L as well, but on IRIX 6.2. It did not reach
resolution because with the information given, it is not clear where the
sign bit was lost.

My mistake for not following up on that. I guess I thought the sprintf
result was enough.
So how do I help further investigate where the signbit is lost?
I can do any testing required on IRIX 5.3 and 6.2 though I might need
guidance as to exactly what and how.
