The patch is fine, gnulibology was not well defined when I contributed mathl and then I didn't follow up.
There's quite some duplication in the macros, but this more than anything else highlights a deficiency of AC_SEARCH_LIBS/AC_CHECK_LIB (which does not allow using a declaration from a header).
