OK, but that will take some work, and in the meantime we have
the problem now with Emacs. These patches patch are small,
fix the Emacs problem, and are not that big a barrier to
maintainability. We can revert them once we add
extended-dependency tracking. And in the meantime we could
add comments explaining the situation; surely that should suffice.
