Well, how about that!  I didn't even think to check the repo, since one of their
defining principles is not to reinstall another copy of packages that are 
shipped
with the OS by Apple merely for the sake of having a newer version.

I'm glad they break that rule occasionally when it makes life so much easier :)

Mostly so to save people like me from ourselves - we don't want to go back to
MacPorts, and think we have to compile the most recent gettext for ourselves.
Kidding.  Of course, it's my own fault that I wasted time trying to reinvent
that patch myself before giving up and complaining to the list.  Sorry for the
noise.
