Good point. But I don't think it makes a difference for Gnulib:

- When we say that gnulib support a platform, it means that its users should
  be able to install new versions of GNU packages on it.
- Whereas when a vendor offers support for "old application environments
  that can't be upgraded" in boxed or virtualized environments, it means
  that the customers can run their old environment on newer hardware in
  some way.

In these situations the customers will not need or want to make big
changes to their old application environments. Probably not even install
"security fixes".
