Hi:

gnupload is very helpful but a little tricky to use the first time.

'
gnupload 2016-01-11.22 --to ftp.gnu.org:
<project> <file>.tar.gz
works only when called from the local directory of the file to be uploaded but it does not trigger any error if called from another directory.
Instead, the ftp file placement script fails and emails you a failure message that doesn't point you to the source of the error.  It would be much more helpful if the script gave you a clear message that it must be run from the local directory of the file to upload or the ftp will fail.

Also, https://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/maintain.html#Automated-Upload-Procedure
, indicates that you need to generate the .sig and .directive files before invoking gnupload but in reality gnupload generates these two files for you, so some correction of this documentation would save new users a lot of effort there.
