Bruno and I had a conversation on bug-gnulib about this recently, and he is of the opinion that gl_SILENT is a good way to hide these checks. I'm not so sure. Currently Gnulib defines gl_SILENT in m4/gnulib-common.m4 as an experiment, but never uses it.
