Thanks for this suggestion; I wasn't aware of this general mechanism.

I tried it, and just to be sure I set a regexp that would match too many files:

exclude_file_name_regexp--sc_po_check = lib

Sure enough, this caused sc_po_check to generate a diff that removed all of the files under lib2ps/. However, the diff also *added* all the files under lib/, suggesting that the regexp is not being used to filter gnulib files.
