I've taken the following steps in conjunction with your directions:

I don't appear to have a script called best_load
Instead I used gunpod_addsong.pl and saw the following results:
gnupod_addsong.pl -m /mnt/ipod/ "Radiohead - 08 - Vegetable.mp3"
gnupod_addsong.pl Version 0.99.8 (C) Adrian Ulrich
+ [MP3 ][ 1] Vegetable | Pablo Honey | Radiohead

You can now umount your iPod. [Files: 1]
- May the iPod be with you!

umount /mnt/ipod
eject /dev/sdd
Unfortunately, the iPod's interface (via the LCD) reports no artists, no
music, no albums, no songs etc.
Any other suggestions about what might be causing this issue?
Thanks for your help.
