I see no big point sticking with apples deprecated API ... unless we
have
people using it. We should check this, but my impression is that there
are no GNUstep apps using the 'extended' features.

We choose our own path with respect how to handle menus
and horizontal menus in particular.
I think I'd go for this.
We *should* keep OpenStep conformance ... this is really easy because
the OpenStep menu was simple rather than bloated.
Our extensions should be easy to maintain, but versatile enough to
support the features of current (and future) MacOS-X
