Follow-up Comment #1:
That syntax error is telling you that your local copy of the file is corrupt
... probably because you edited it in some way which was incompatible with
changes in CVS, and when you updated from CVS, the cvs command would have
warned you that there was a conflict in the file, and marked the incompatible
code sctions with >>> and <<< sequences.
The simple solution is to delete the file and fetch a fresh copy from CVS.
