Follow-up Comment #1, patch #4598 (project gnustep): Ok, so how about replacing every occurance of unicodeFileSystemRepresentation with (unichar*)[path cStringUsingEncoding: NSUnicodeStringEncoding] which is what unicodeFileSystemRepresentation actually does internally. I would be fine with that approach also.
