Yes, it stopped. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Windowmaker has been installed and run before trying to install GNUstep since Windowmaker also creates a ~/GNUstep directory. I guess when GNUstep then tries to clean up an old installation it might stumble across this.
I've never seen that. Do you have the files in the logs directory that I can see?
I am not sure since I installed GNUstep manually later on but I can have a look into that. Currently the machine is not usable because of a processor cooler failure.
