Details:
System is Ubuntu 6.10 (gcc 4.1.2, Xorg 7.1.1., on i386
When an application is launched, the windows (including the app icon and the
menu) appear but are plain white, as in this screenshot of Terminal:

This is accompanied by messages such as:
