Follow-up Comment #1:

Here the #ifdef for the cairo version was misplaced. I corrected this and now
it should at least complie on your machine.

Still I would not recommend to use the cairo backend on anything below cairo
version 1.4 (recommended 1.4.10 and above).
cairo 1.6 is expected any day now and I am looking forward to move on to that
release.
