Details:

The are a number of issues:

1. backend does not default to a known font if the "default" font (Helvetica)
is not found (easy workaround is to set the default font to a known font).

2. Images are not displayed.

3. After a window redraw or two, the window turns black and you get the error
message "Cairo status 'out of memory' in copy'"
