I think David is using the startup package, which probably doesn’t check correctly.

David: Also note that GNUstep most likely doesn’t work on cygwin. But it’s been a while since I’ve checked, so perhaps you might get lucky.

Yes, I was using the startup package. It turns out that there is a build of GNUstep in the Cygwin Ports collection, but I was only trying to build it to experiment with and learn Objective C, and I've found another method, so I won't be needing it. Thanks for the quick response.
