Details:

The cairo backend fails to build from source with strict linker flags because
it is not being linked with fontconfig.  In configure.ac it is wrongly assumed
that -lfontconfig will be inherited from Xft, but that is no longer the case:

$ grep ^Libs /usr/lib/*/pkgconfig/xft.pc 
Libs: -L${libdir} -lXft

Trivial patch attached.
