Thank you very much.  Adam Fedor had already told me to uninstall the old versions and then the installation went smoothly.

These are old versions. You seem to be using "gnustep-startup".
Do not use "gnustep-startup". It is old and is not updated to latest versions.
It's main function is to catch beginners, cause them to be frustrated,
and thus give up on GNUSTEP.
It should be removed and all mention of it removed. I've said this
before. I assume advice will be ignored.

get the latest
gnustep-make
gnustep-base
gnustep-gui
gnustep-back
and install them one by one in that order
