From: Gerrit A. Smit
Subject: .char doesn't seem to work for 8 bit characters
Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2003 11:16:07 +0200 (CET)

                           Groff Bug Report
GROFF VERSION: 1.18
MACHINE: Pentium
OS: Linux 2.4.18
COMPILER: gcc-3.2
INPUT FILES:
IMHO this bug has nothing to do with font files.
COMMAND LINE:

print ".char ¤ \s+5\(Fn\s0
Result with .char: ¤
.tr ¤\[Fn]
.char \[Fn] \s+5\[Fn]\s0
Result with .tr+.char: ¤"|
groff

DESCRIPTION OF INCORRECT BEHAVIOUR:
Redefinition of 8-bit-characters doesn't work with this version of groff
(it works with 1.11).

SUGGESTED FIX [optional]:
