Dear Ralph,

Another tardy response. This one is to your message:

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-groff/2004-08/msg00162.html

I've chatted a bit with Werner Lemberg, and provided a reference to a book published in 1986 documenting \a in tables (Gehani, 'Document Formatting and Typesetting on the UNIX System', Silicon Press, ISBN 0-9615336-0-9), and he found a second reference to it in an O'Reilly book, and has provided me with a fix which is in groff under CVS. Using 'tbl -C' for compatibility gives me the leader characters; 'groff -C' provides the '-C' option to tbl as well a troff.

Thank you for your assistance.
