Follow-up Comment #1:

Abusing eqn(1) to merely format argument placeholders in a manual page is
clearly a terrible idea, but cleaning that up is a bit more work than i want
to do right now - but anyone else is certainly welcome to remove the
gratuitous eqn(1) abuse.

Besides, i might feel tempted to ask whether that .lf amounts to a bug in
eqn(1), but that transcends the scope of this ticket.

Even though using '\c' in manual pages is ugly and ought to be avoided as much
as possible, Bjarni is right that it's the simplest way to work around the
current mess in this manual page, so i pushed his patch in
68a34636bff0197bfe4cc61841dbadc78b11e1b4.
