Yes, indeed--thanks, Dave.

And in my email to the list I started out okay but then my brain derailed and
I started calling the font description file directive "file" instead of
"name".  Argh.

I'm not getting much feedback to my survey, but the wind seems to be blowing
against directory traversal and therefore for the sterner validation of the
"name" directive I already put in place.  

I can put a sed script into the commit message that will copy pathful "name"
directive entries to a comment, leaving only a basename-y one to be validated.
