Follow-up Comment #3, bug #64891 (project groff):

The fact that "configured" can be read as the clause's verb and "controls" as
a noun did make me have to read it a couple times before being able to parse
it.

"Controls" also doesn't seem like the ideal verb for that situation; Bjarni's
suggested "is used" seems more applicable, though the wording would be clunky
substituting that verb phrase in the clause as written.  But starting the
clause with "the margin character used is..." would eliminate the long
descriptive phrase between the noun and the verb.

Or for a more minimal change, the reader wouldn't be tempted to read
"configured" as a verb if extra words clarified its role as part of a
subordinate clause: "the margin character that was last configured..."
