Can't boot NT5

I'm using grub-0.5.96 on an Asus P2L97S to perform muti-booting and it mostly
works very well indeed (getting round a >1024 problem I was having with
Lilo), so first, a word of thanks - it's a nice product. However, I can't get
it to boot a copy of Win2000 proffesional which I've installed on an HPFS
partition. Is it the latter which is the root of my problem? Have you had
reports of success by anybody else (I can report that WinME boots OK).

I've got two drives installed, an IDE containing a tiny linux partition for
holding a kernel and a WinME partition. The second disk is a 9M SCSI disk
which says it's got 64h, 32sect, 8748 cyl. The NT5 is partition 3 so I'm
invoking:-
rootnoverify (hd1,2)
makeactive
chainloader +1
boot

which gives me
A disk read error occured
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

This board uses an AIC-7880 and I note you've got warnings about it. However
I suspect you may have resolved these issues, because I've been able to boot
the linux partitions on the SCSI disk which are well beyond the 1024
threshold.
