So without EZ-drive installed grub can see the partitions, but with
EZ-drive it can't? Very strange, it should be the other way round.

Shouldn't it be hd0, or is the 40 Gig disk your second hard disk?

What does the command "geometry (hd1)" (try also with hd0) in GRUB
print? Please try it with and without going through the EZ-drive
selector.

The latest CVS version has EZ support, which means that it can read a
EZ disk without going through the EZ-Drive selector. The page
http://www.gnu.org/software/devel.html contains details how to access
CVS. But your symptoms are strange, so I'm not sure if it helps you.
