Try to make a GRUB boot floppy with
cd <path-where-grub-stage[12]-is>
dd if=stage1 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 count=1
dd if=stage2 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 seek=1
Boot from floppy and see, if you can find a (hd0) ....
I don't know, how GRUB looks for the BIOS disks, if you start GRUB
on the LINUX command line.
But you can also force GRUB using a disk with the `--device-map'
option. But I have not tired yet.
