I regret to have to say that the common or garden Englishman is no
better at French (or German or ...).

One of the problems of working in IT is that English is very much
the lingua Franca of the industry. As long as you can read and
understand some spoken English you can communicate with fellow
professionals, but once it comes to those outside the the industry ...

And speaking English all day in the office does not help getting used
to hearing the local language.
