One possible cause may be the BIOS setting. For example, you must make
sure that the geometry of the floppy is identical to the media you
used for GRUB.

However, I wouldn't be surprised even if GRUB doesn't work with 486,
as I haven't tested it with 486 at all (simply because I have no
486). Does anyone use GRUB with 486 with no problem?
