fs on wrong block

I have mangled my mandrake 2.2.15-4mdk linux on hda5, windows 98 is at hda1. On my laptop (75MHz) I compiled 2.4.18 mdk, but when I use grub to boot into either of my kernels I get
"Kernel panic: VFS : Unable to mount root fs on 08:01". This should be 03:05 I believe. I don't think this is a bug as I no doubt made mistakes, like not ensuring that lilo ran properly. However if I can get round the problem with grub or using some option I would appreciate the help. Bill Eyles
