Where does grub store the default choice?

Hi,

I'm using the save default option with grub and everything works great, it 
loads the last selected choice.

What I am trying to figure out is where this data is stored on disk?  It 
doesn't appear to be stored in the boot sectors on the drive and I couldn't 
see anything change in /boot/grub - Does anyone know how this data is stored? 
I had a look over the code but I couldn't grok where the reading/writing was.

If anyone can tell me, you'll be saving me about 10% of my development time!
