GRUB stops working after installing USB controller |

I had GRUB version 0.92 working perfectly with my system, dual booting
Linux and Windows 2000. Now, after installing a PCI 4-port USB
controller card, GRUB claims that it loads stage 2 then stops hard.
I've tried booting from the hard drive and from a GRUB floppy with the
same results. Removing the USB controller allows GRUB to boot again.
I've tried the latest release version of GRUB, and the same thing
happens. I also tried configuring GRUB to not use the PCI bios, but
that didn't change anything.
Any ideas?
