I'm stumbling upon the old "geometry -w" issue in mkbimage. Google found
for me that in http://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-grub/2003-08/msg00132.html

Current 0.93 CVS as available in Debian sid has the same problem: those
flags are not recognized. And the given URL points to a now-non-existent
host.

Till now the error did not seem much problematic to me, as I only had to
build 1.44 images. But I'm not able to build a 2.88 one, and that is more
annoying :(

What's the current status of mkbimage ?

BTW, I have a patched mkbimage 1.17 available at
http://ydirson.free.fr/soft/linux/L4/mkbimage - at this date it fixes bugs
reported as http://bugs.debian.org/239066 and http://bugs.debian.org/242319
using the patches I included in those reports.
