This is a feature that was discussed very often on this list already.
If you want to know the outcome of previous discussions, have a look
at the archives of this mailinglist.

Personally I have the idea this feature will never make it into GRUB
Legacy, but it is likely that GRUB 2 will get support for such feature
someday.

The best thing you could do is checking some patches people sent in
(and I assume that more patches can be found using google).  Of course
we do not support problems with GRUB caused by those patches...
