memtest won't load from grub

Item 3404 in your bug tracking system (
http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?func=detailitem&item_id=3404 ) from last year
still exists in grub 0.94-r1 under Gentoo.

The brief summary:

Can't load memtest.bin on an asus nforce board.

The author of 3404 says it works on a different board, and can load from a
floppy as well. I have no floppy and no CD, so I can't test that.

I've seen comments that memtest86 doesn't load with some versions of grub
when a splashscreen is specified, but does without it. Those comments were
for grub 0.92 though, and a patch was made to fix it. Some people can get
it to work from the config file, but not from the grub command prompt.

I've tried all the combinations, but always get the same error shown in
3404: Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory.

'file' says memtest.bin is an 'x86 boot sector', and it is about 80k instead
of 40k (I think this means it may have "lilo"isms tacked onto it, but I
don't know for sure).

I added a comment to 3404, then noticed that you don't use the bug tracking
system anymore.

I am using Gentoo. I boot lots of those kernels with never a problem. I
have tried this with both memtest86 and memtest86plus. In the past I did
get memtest to load over the network using pxe, but that bypassed grub.
Unfortunately, that option is no longer available to me either. I did try
the memtest image I was using for the pxe boot, and it gives the same
result.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Greg Slocum
