Sounds almost reasonable.
Except that in the newer case, at grub boot the splash comes on nicely 
(you know, the debian-version of the screen with @) when booting to 
Linux. In the first case, you might be right. Even though, earlier that 
same screen came up nicely.

For curiosity: did you *remove* something that had been there earlier.
In neither case did I change the splash screen or its location.

Q.: Should I simply comment out the splash screen in menu.lst to see how 
it is behaving or are you already @ work on something else ?
How can I help you getting this thing done ?
The worst case is the original one, because I cannot select the OS at boot.
