Follow-up Comment #2, bug #17882 (project grub):

I can also confirm this phenomenon. It appears to be how the ASUS P5B lays
out the drives on its controllers (note the plural).

There is two controllers in the board: an Intel ICH8 and a JMicron JMB363. I
also have a RAID card in the system as well. The Intel SATA controllers
probably come first, then the JMicron SATA controllers, and finally the
JMicron PATA controllers (where I have my drive connected). Note that Linux
didn't support this JMicron controller for a while.

I also use the FreeBSD boot manager to boot my FreeBSD system. Whenever I
install grub on this disk, I get the "GRUB Error 21" problem (cannot find the
disk). 

FreeBSD addresses this driver as ad8 for me, and the drives on my RAID card
as ad10.

Perhaps grub does not like this controller? Strangely, it will boot off the
RAID controller I have installed.
