compile_error grub-1.95

Dear Sirs and Ladies,

tried to compile a grub-1.95 on a freebsd-5.3 os (i386).
everything needed is installed and "configure" does not complain -
but "make" fails.

i am not shure whether this might be a bug or not -
see addendum for details, please.

could you give me some advice ?

p.s. booting manually (chainload) with stage1 and stage2 on a floppy, taken 
from grub-0.95 of a redhat-9 os, works fine for both, the mentioned freebsd 
and a netbsd-3.0 as well.
