manual doesn't mention UUID

Looking at
$ apt-cache policy grub-legacy-doc
  Installed: 0.97-41
one finds no mention of UUID.

man lilo.conf mentions UUID, so lilo must be more advanced.

Or maybe grub disposes of such worries. (Even so, the manual should
still mention UUID, etc.)

One cannot tell, as the manual is quite complicated.

I think you need a quick start section.

E.g., older user me has this lilo.conf,

  menu-title=jidanni1 prompt read-only compact lba32
  boot=/dev/hdb root="UUID=0eacb674-cb86-xxxx-yyyy-4debb3cd9a61" <--I masked
some numbers here, for fear of losing my "mojo" here on the net, if indeed
there is some secret involved.
  image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.25-2-686 label=2.6.25-2-686
   initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.6.25-2-686
  image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-1-686 label=2.6.24-1-686
   initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-1-686

and knows how to say
# lilo
at the root prompt.

What would the equivalent grub file and step be?

You see in http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2008/06/msg00411.html
there is talk of how one might want to move to grub.

However, as there is no quick start guide, only a formidable manual,
it looks like maybe I just might keep using lilo and never know the
difference anyway... no use in giving gramps a whole new set of false
teeth, he won't be using them for long anyway, etc.

P.S., there is a raw ^G in /usr/share/doc/grub/examples/menu.lst.
Maybe give other ways of writing it too.
