Details:

When installing Grub in the beginning of a partition, later verification of
the first 512 bytes of the partition shows nothing there, i.e., Grub is is
installing to the Linux distro fine (In this case Debian Squeeze KDE AMD64),
but is not writing itself to the parition table.

The version in question is 1.98+20100804-14.

The purpose of such an installation is to be able to boot Grub from the NT
Loader (Windows XP Boot Menu), and this has not been a problem in previous
versions/attempts.

The system in question is using an Intel ICH7 Southbridge, with one harddrive
attached to the ICH7 SATA. The drive is split into three partitions, the
primary for Windows, and the other Two for Linux EXT3 and Swap.

The install completes "successfuly" from the Debian Advanced Graphical
Install, and the subsequent shell installation via "grub-install --force
/dev/sda5" produce equal results. The "--force" must be used because Grub
says something about installing it in this fashion being UNRELIABLE and not a
good idea, but this has not been a problem at all previously, and what more,
LILO installs in this manner just fine and boots fine from NT Loader.
