Auto-detection of a filesystem of failed

Happy New Year bug-grub.

I'm trying to set up a new hard drive - actually, a raid 1 array, with 
linux & mdadm. I have booted off Kubuntu 11.04 live cd, have copied 
files onto new array, mounted at /new/ and am trying:

grub-install /dev/sda --root-directory=/new

have also tried to install to /dev/sdb, and /dev/md0 which all say:

/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no such disk.
