Follow-up Comment #2, bug #53227 (project grub):
As a workaround, could a btrfs subvolume for _/boot_ be used that's being
mounted with _compress-force=lzo_ ? (note: assuming there's only one btrfs
partition: the one for */* and mounted _compress-force=zstd_ or
_compress=zstd_)
I haven't looked into it yet, but if anyone knows please say so.
