Success for CFLAGS=-O3 ./configure && make -j && make check on gcc
(Ubuntu 4.9.2-10ubuntu13) 4.9.2.

Success for CC=clang CFLAGS=-O3 ./configure && make -j && make check
on clang version 3.6.0-2ubuntu1.

As others have noted clang makes serveral bugfix suggestions in its
build output including abs/fabs changes.

If someone out there has access to the Intel compilers, please kick
the tires.  A friend has reported that icc 12.1 has problems on these
alphas.  I have registered to try to get access to
https://software.intel.com/en-us/qualify-for-free-software/opensourcecontributor
to see if I can figure out what's happening.
