Indeed.  The ‘bootstrap-origin’ procedure, defined in (gnu packages
bootstrap), arranges to use the bootstrap binaries of gzip, patch,
guile, etc. when patching origins.

Perhaps we’re missing a use of ‘bootstrap-origin’ somewhere in (gnu
packages commencement)?
