That fixed it for me.

Specifically `export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=$HOME/tmp` like Maxime mentioned.

I think this should be documented for guix home users on a foreign distro so 
they
don't get frustrated with this detail of getting set up.

Or is there another way that this configuration should be managed on a foreign 
distro?
