Thanks for all the testing and the report.

So far I have been unable to reproduce that on i386 FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE
as follows:

    (export PATH=/bin:/usr/bin; ./configure CC=cc && make && make check)

All tests passed:

    ...
    ============================================================================
    Testsuite summary for gzip 1.5
    ============================================================================
    # TOTAL: 12
    # PASS:  12
    # SKIP:  0
    # XFAIL: 0
    # FAIL:  0
    # XPASS: 0
    # ERROR: 0
