Nope, it's a bit bucket.  In your tests, you were contacting the local
host because 172.16.0.1 was your side of the dummy interface and the
kernel short-circuited to your box without actually going through the
`dummy interface,' just like it would short-circuit packets destined
to one of your eth* addresses.

Try sending something to 172.16.0.2, and you'll see what Marcus meant.
The packets disappear into nowhere.
