The statically-linked and dynamically-linked cases are quite different.
The easiest way to figure it out is to watch it happen in gdb from the
beginning.  To watch the dynamic case, run gdb on ld.so itself.  I am happy
to walk you through it, but you need to be precise about what you are asking.
